The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 28 through March 6, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, February 28
At 12:18 p.m., Engine 107, with units from the Pasadena Fire Department, responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of Laurel Avenue in Sierra Madre. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient with burns to the abdomen and chest area. The patient suffered the burns when she leaned over a candle and her dress caught fire. The patient received advanced life support measures and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Monday, March 1
At 5:08 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported person chocking in the 600 block of West Naomi Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-year-old female in full cardiac arrest with the mother performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the infant with direction from the 911 dispatcher. Fire personnel, performed many advanced life support measures and techniques in an effort to revive the patient. Firefighter/Paramedics transported the patient to a local emergency room for further treatment.
Tuesday, March 2
At 1:25 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of South Old Ranch Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures including a 12-lead Electrocardiogram. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Wednesday, March 3
At 6:20 p.m., Truck 105 responded to a reported hazardous condition in the 700 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel were met by bank employees outside the building stating that an employee had inadvertently set off a “money pac” inside the vault. Firefighters wearing self-contained breathing apparatus entered the vault, removed the money pac, and ventilated the building using positive pressure ventilation. After the irritant had been dissipated the scene was released to the business.
Thursday, March 4
At 7:34 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a person choking in the 200 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an unconscious elderly male suffering from respiratory difficulties. Performing abdominal thrusts, fire personnel were able to dislodge enough of the blockage at the scene to restore the patient’s breathing. Once the patient was stabilized, he was transported patient to local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Friday, March 5
At 1:05 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a reported fire alarm activation in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large amount of water coming from a large multi-story parking structure. After further investigation, firefighters discovered that a commercial truck had struck and damaged a fire sprinkler pipe. Fire personnel shut off the fire sprinkler system and released the scene to the facilities’ management to make the necessary repairs.
Saturday, March 6
At 7:34 p.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision with a person trapped on the westbound 210 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found the vehicle down the embankment of the Santa Anita on-ramp. Fire personnel treated two patients with advanced life support measures and transported both patients to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 513 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
Volunteer Weekly Activity Report
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
