Directing HBO pilot at track

It was no April Fool’s joke for Santa Anita race track fans on Thursday when a Hollywood production crew and actors including Nick Nolte began setting up and shooting scenes for a new high-profile and expensive HBO TV series pilot called “Luck.

We got a glimpse of heavyweight director Michael Mann moving from one set to another up and down the apron giving directions to the many camera and production people spread throughout the area.

Show creator and award-winning producer David Milch will be one of the guest speakers Thursday at the Mayor’s Breakfast at Santa Anita’s Frontrunner.
