The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of April 25-May 1, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, April 25
At 1:23 p.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle into a fence in 100 block of West Sierra Madre Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle that was driven into a fence. Fire personnel evaluated two patients complaining of various injuries. Both patients were transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Monday, April 26
* At 2:22 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a dumpster fire in the 400 block of South Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a large roll off dumpster on fire and requested an additional engine company for more personnel and water to extinguish the fire. Both engines were on scene for approximately an hour extinguishing and overhauling the fire.
* At 3:10 p.m., Monrovia Engine 102 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian in the 100 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a teenage male had been hit by a car. Fire Paramedics treated and transported the patient to a local trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.
Wednesday, April 28
At 1:01 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported traffic collision in the intersection of South Baldwin Avenue and Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found one patient involved in a single vehicle traffic collision. After further investigation, fire personnel discovered that the female driver had fallen asleep while driving and driven through the center median hitting several bushes and a concrete sign. Fire Paramedics treated the patient for head trauma and other associated minor injuries. The patient refused ambulance transportation to an area emergency room and signed a release.
Thursday, April 29
At 6:57 p.m., Engine responded to a vegetation fire in the 200 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. While enroute, Verdugo dispatch assigned additional units due to the fire’s proximity to a structure. Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Monrovia Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 were added to the response. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vegetation fire next to a structure with thirty foot high flame lengths. While the fire was being extinguished, the building was evacuated and checked for fire extension. Three stray cats were injured during the fire and the Pasadena Humane Society was contacted to care for the animals. The fire was caused by hot embers from on-going construction adjacent to the structure.

While firefighters battle the blaze at the REI sporting goods building, paramedics give oxygen to kittens who were caught in the brush when the fire began.
Friday, April 30
At 6:30 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call on a Metro Transit Authority bus in the 100 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a patient experiencing abdominal pain. Fire Paramedics treated and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 324 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
Volunteer Weekly Activity Report
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
