Fire by car striking burlap sack

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of June 13-20, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, June 13
At 11:15 p.m., Engine 107 and Pasadena Engine 37 responded to smoke in the area on the 210 freeway at Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel investigated and found the source of smoke to be from a large smoldering compost pile located on the property at 301 N. Baldwin Avenue.  Fire personnel utilized water and Class A foam to extinguish and overhaul the fire.

Monday, June 14
At 3:36 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-story office complex with smoke coming from a second floor office unit. Fire personnel laddered the structure, used a thermal imaging camera to find the heat source, and disconnected the power to one air conditioning unit on the roof. The scene was then released to the building manager for repairs to the malfunctioning air conditioner motor.

Tuesday, June 15
At 10:38 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a reported vehicle into a structure in the 100 block of East Live Oak Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle that had run into a block wall near a building at the location. The occupants of the vehicle were assessed for injuries by fire personnel and all refused medical treatment.

Thursday, June 17
At 2:03 p.m., Engine 107 responded to a reported vehicle fire in the intersection of North Santa Anita Avenue and the 210 Freeway. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a passenger vehicle well involved with fire. The fire was extinguished with compressed air foam, overhauled, and investigated for cause. Following the investigation it was determined that, while traveling west on the 210 freeway, the vehicle struck a large burlap sack that contained brush and other vegetation. The bag and dried vegetation ignited due to friction and engine heat and continued to burn extending into the engine and passenger compartment. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was released to the owner.

Friday, June 18
At 8:12 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported medical assist in the 1400 block of Lovell Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a disoriented female lying in bed. Fire personnel evaluated the patient and determined she had voluntarily consumed an unknown quantity of pills and alcohol. Fire paramedics started an intravenous line, administered medication, and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, June 19
At 9:40 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported emergency medical assist in the 100 block of North First Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a mentally altered middle-aged female, having suffered a syncopal episode while exercising on a treadmill machine. Fire paramedics assessed, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Training
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 332 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
