210 car fire fatality

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of December 27, 2009 through January 2, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 24 At 9:34 p.m., Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported traffic collision with fire on the eastbound 210 Freeway, east of Rosemead Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two vehicle traffic collision with one passenger vehicle fully involved with fire. Upon further investigation, fire personnel identified five victims with varying degrees of injuries. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and provided advanced life support to two of the victims. One patient was pronounced dead on scene, one patient was transported to an area trauma center with critical injuries, and three patients refused medical treatment. The scene was released to the California Highway Patrol for further investigation.

Monday, January 25 At 11:39 a.m., Rescue Ambulance 106, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a medical assist in the 5000 block of Peck Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient experiencing extremity pain after being hit by a vehicle while riding her bicycle. The patient was placed in full cervical spine precaution and transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, January 26 At 8:29 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with one unit from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 700 block of West Longden Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single story residential structure with light smoke coming from the rear. After further investigation, fire personnel found an appliance fire confined to the room of origin. Firefighters extinguished the fire, checked the room for fire extension, and removed the involved appliance from the house. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in origin and the scene was released to a City building inspector.  The building inspector cooperated with SCE to further investigate the cause of the fire.

Wednesday, January 27 During Arcadia Fire Department’s 24 calls for service between 8 a.m., and 8 p.m., on January 27th, Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical emergency in the 100 block of Oak Grove in the City of Monrovia with the Monrovia Fire Department.  The patient, a 34-month-old child, was experiencing an allergic reaction.   Rescue Ambulance 105 treated and transported the child to a local pediatric medical center.

Thursday, January 28

  1. At 7:20 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from Pasadena Fire Department, responded to a reported electrical fire in the 900 block of Singing Wood Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found light smoke coming from an exterior wall where an outdoor barbeque was attached to a wall. A thermal imaging camera was utilized to detect a small fire in the wall of the structure. The wall was breached, exposing burning electrical wiring insulation, which was extinguished.

  2. At 10:37 p.m., Engine 105 responded to an animal assist in the 1600 block of Mayflower Avenue at the request of the Pasadena Humane Society. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an injured raccoon in a tree. The Humane Society Officer requested a ladder so he could attempt to rescue the animal from the tree. The rescue attempt failed.  At the request of said officer firefighters utilized low pressure water from a hose to guide the animal down from the tree. The animal self extricated from the tree and ran off. No animal or firefighter was injured during this incident.

Saturday, January 30 At 6:18 p.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of West Colorado Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found two patients complaining of shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting from exposure to a leaking pressurized carbon dioxide cylinder in the basement of the business. The patients were taken to a well ventilated area and evaluated, treated with advanced life support and transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.  Prior to leaving the scene, firefighters tested the atmosphere of the structure to determine it was within normal limits.  The business manger was advised to have the tanks inspected and repaired before operating the cylinder again.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 384 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6.5 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
