Harris Newmark, first placed sheep on the land in 1872 when he purchased the land for $85,000. At that time there was good money in the sheep business. Newmark, a shrewd and successful businessman, was looking for great profits from his investment.
After his ranch purchase in 1875 from Newmark, Baldwin continued raising sheep in the area north of present Colorado Place for many years.
