Aleupkigna (place of many waters)

Native Americans from the Stone Age Shoshone era, or Aleupkigna/Gabrielinos as they have become known, settled the land that the Arboretum occupies. The rich soil and bountiful water supply made it an ideal location for the agriculture of the day and has continued as such. Baldwin Lake, artesian springs, water from Santa Anita Canyon and an underground aquifer created by the Raymond Hill Earthquake Fault Line provided Rancho Santa Anita with an ample supply of the best water in the San Gabriel Valley. In its present-day form, water falls, aquatic gardens, fountains, tropical pools and artesian springs supply the Arboretum with an abundance of water for current-day visitors to enjoy this Garden of Eden.
