Anoakia, Anita Baldwin’s Estate

In 1913, Anita Baldwin built a three story, fifty-room mansion located on nineteen acres at the northeast corner of Baldwin Avenue and Foothill Blvd. Anita spared no expense in making the mansion one of utmost perfection and beauty. She commissioned artist Maynard Dixon to create murals depicting American Indian life for her entrance hall and Celtic scenes that covered three walls of her 30×40 foot playroom, called the Anoakia Jinx Room. The grounds included tennis courts, a swimming pool and bath-house, a gymnasium, aviaries, kennels and stables. About two years after Anita’s death in 1939, the private Anoakia School for Girls opened. Later it became the coeducational, ”Anoakia School,” and the facility moved to the city of Duarte in 1990. Plans to preserve the estate failed in 1999, demolition took place and the property became the site of luxury homes.
