Arcadia’s first schoolhouse was built in 1907 on First Avenue and California. It became inadequate and was replaced with a new facility in 1919. This updated and modern school was one of the finest in the state of California at that time. Its basic features are recognizable today. From its beginnings, Arcadians have emphasized education and its schools have reflected that importance without fail.
Today the school is called First Avenue Middle school and it continues its tradition of quality education. In fact, the school ranks in the top 12 best public middle schools in the Los Angeles area.
First Avenue Middle School will celebration 110 years on Saturday, December 9 from 11am – 6pm in conjunction with Downtown Arcadia’s Holiday Market. The school will be offering tours and demonstrations, science experiments, a giant Rubik’s cube sculpture, music and dance performances. This event is free and open to the community.
