Assault, crash injuries

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 31, 2010 through Feb. 6, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 31

At 10:24 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an emergency medical assist in the area of Hacienda Drive and North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 27-year-old male who was the victim of an assault. After further investigation, fire personnel found cuts, abrasions, and contusions to the victims head and face. Firefighters conducted a complete head to toe assessment, treated, and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluations.

Monday, February 1

At 12:48 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of East Santa Clara Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient complaining of shortness of breath while being examined at a doctor’s office. The patient received advanced life support treatment to treat inadequate oxygen saturation levels and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, February 2

At 6:01 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 44-year-old female complaining of difficulty breathing while being detained for a fraudulent act in the store security office. Fire personnel, assessed, treated, and transported the patient to a local emergency room for further evaluation and treatment. Arcadia Police followed the Paramedics to the emergency room for further investigation.

Wednesday, February 3

At 8:56 a.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion Chief 105, with units from Pasadena fire Department, responded to a vehicle accident on the Westbound 210 Freeway at the Baldwin Avenue on ramp. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a traffic collision involving three vehicles. Fire personnel utilized the Jaws of Life to open a door on one of the vehicles in order to shut off the ignition. The driver had climbed out of the window prior to our arrival. All drivers were medically evaluated on the scene and refused any further treatment at a hospital. The scene was released to the California Highway Patrol.

Thursday, February 4

At 3:24 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported traffic collision involving a bus and a passenger vehicle in the area of Colorado Boulevard and North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon Arrival, fire personnel found a mid-sized passenger vehicle with moderate front-end damage after rear ending a transit bus. No passengers on the bus or the driver of the passenger vehicle were injured. The scene was released to the Arcadia Police.

Friday, February 5


 At 12:11 p.m., Truck 105 and Engine 107 responded on an automatic aid structure fire assignment to the 4000 block of Park Vista Drive in Pasadena. Arcadia personnel assisted Pasadena Fire Department with ventilation, extinguishment and overhaul of a structure fire in a two story residential building.

 At 12:43 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision in the intersection of Campus Drive and South Santa Anita Ave. Upon arrival, fire personnel found that two vehicles were involved and two patients. Both patients were treated with advanced life support prior to being transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, February 6

Beginning at 8:13 a.m., and ending around 11:30 a.m., the Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of rain related incidents. Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to three traffic collisions on the 210 freeway, transporting three patients to area emergency rooms. Engine 107, Engine 105, and Truck 105 responded to four flooded incidents in various parts of the city using water removal equipment and techniques in each of the incidents and Engine 106 responded to three mal-functioning fire alarms due to the heavy rain. In all, there were no major rockslides or mudflow incidents in the city, related to the 2008 Santa Anita Fire.

FPB Staff began periodic training of City staff in the use of fire extinguishers. Many basics of use and maintenance were reviewed. Staff was also given an opportunity to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire with AFD’s fire burn pan.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 416 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6.5 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
