The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of December 6, 2009 through December 12, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 6 At 3:50 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a child locked in a vehicle located in the parking lot in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a five month old baby accidentally locked inside the vehicle. Fire personnel were able to unlock the door and open the car. The child was evaluated and did not require any medical attention. Tuesday, December 8 * At 6:55 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of San Carlos Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient complaining of bilateral knee, hip and ankle pain from an apparent spider bite. The patient was under a doctors’ care, but requested Paramedics due to persistent pain.   Advanced life support measures were provided on scene and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. * At 1:24 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a trash can fire in the 1200 block of Golden West Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a smoldering trash can in the parking lot of a business. Fire personnel overhauled the trash can to fully extinguish the fire.

Wednesday, December 9 At 12:12 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of Vaquero Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient complaining of abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea.  Advanced life support measures were provided on scene and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, December 10 At 3:38 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of Fairview Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found smoke coming from a two-story condominium. Upon further investigation, fire personnel found the smoke was coming from a fire in a fireplace with a malfunctioning flue. Firefighters removed the smoke, repaired the flue, and released the scene to the occupant.

Friday, December 11 At 5:03 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulances 105 responded to a vehicle accident in the 1800 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle in the center medium. The driver had lost control of his vehicle due to wet, rainy conditions. The driver was treated on scene for neck and back pain injuries and transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, December 12 At 3:20 p.m., Engine 105 and Truck 105 responded to a reported water problem in the 100 block of South First Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an occupied single story commercial business with water leaking through the ceiling from the roof. Fire personnel evacuated the structure and checked the roof, where they found the roof drains clogged, causing a build-up of water. The drains were cleared and the water inside the structure was removed. All of the occupants were allowed to re-enter the business.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 344 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
