ARCADIA, Calif. (July 1, 2016)—Claiborne Farm’s homebred Bendable faced winners for the first time Friday at Santa Anita and responded with a polished 2 ¼ length win in the track’s $58,000 allowance feature for 3-year-old fillies. Trained by Richard Mandella, she broke from the rail with Flavien Prat and although she was pressed from the outset, remained well within herself around the far turn. As the field turned for home, Prat called upon her and she left her competition in her wake, cruising to a final six furlong clocking of 1:09.59.
“She’s a fast filly,” Mandella deadpanned afterward. “The nice thing about today is that she was in control and within herself. She was able to sit while getting pressured from the outside and it looked like Flavien had quite a bit under him. She was within herself and she didn’t get rank or get excited. Like I say, she’s fast.”
A 3 ¾ length maiden winner here going 5 ½ furlongs June 3, she was off at 1-5 in a field of five and paid $2.40, $2.20 and $2.10.
A Kentucky-bred daughter of Horse Greeley, out of the Arch mare, Bend, she picked up $34,800 for the win, increasing her earnings to $68,400.
Last and about six lengths off the winner with a quarter mile to run, Sweet Halory, who was ridden by Mike Smith, rallied well through the lane for second, finishing 4 ¼ lengths in front of Run for Retts. Off at 9-1, she paid $4.40 and $3.00.
Next to last at the quarter, Run for Retts rallied three-wide under Tyler Baze for third and finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of Street Surrender. Off at 7-1, Run for Retts paid $2.20 to show.
Fractions on the race were 21.42, 44.34 and 56.69.
First post time for a nine-race card Saturday at Santa Anita is at 1:30 p.m. Admission gates open at 11:30 a.m.
