Car engulfed in flames

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 7 through Feb. 13, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, Feb. 7 At 2:21 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported assault victim in the 100 block of East Live Oak Ave. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated the victim who refused any further treatment and was released to the Arcadia Police Department.

Tuesday, Feb. 9 At 7:16 p.m., Truck 105 and Engine 107, along with the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to the report of smoke inside a structure in the 700 block of Monterey Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered food burning inside an apartment. The small fire was extinguished and positive pressure ventilation was utilized to remove the smoke from the residence.

Wednesday, Feb. 10 At 7:18 a.m., Engine 107 responded to a hazardous water condition in the intersection of North Baldwin Avenue and Gloria Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle that had sheared off a fire hydrant due to a traffic accident, causing a large geyser of water. Fire personnel, along with Arcadia Public Works personnel, located the underground valve for the water main and shut off the water. The scene was released to Arcadia Public Works and Arcadia Police.

Thursday, Feb. 11 At 5:02 p.m., Engine 106, with one Los Angeles County Fire unit, responded to a reported vehicle fire in the area of Holly Avenue and Las Tunas Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a passenger vehicle fully involved with fire. Fire personnel from both departments extinguished the fire, investigated to determine the cause of the fire, and overhauled the fire. There were no injuries associated with this incident.

Friday, Feb. 12 At 6:00 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported fire alarm with smoke detector activation in the 00 block of Alice Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel were met by an AT&T employee at the front of the building, allowing fire personnel access to the mechanical room of the building. The mechanical room was filled with light smoke and the smell of burning oil. Further investigation found a small amount of fluid coming from under the generator and collecting in a small puddle on the floor. Light smoke was seen rising from a mechanical pump that was associated with the performance and operation of an electrical generator for the facility. Truck 105 was requested to provide positive pressure to remove the smoke from the basement portion of the structure.  The alarm panel was reset and the scene was released to the AT&T employee.

Saturday, Feb. 13 At 1:03 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an emergency medical assist in the area of Fifth Avenue and East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 42-year-old male who was extremely agitated and demonstrating behavioral difficulties. After further investigation it was determined the patient had run out of his prescription medications. The patient was assessed, treated, and transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 292 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
