Cawston’s Ostrich Farm was the oldest farm of its kind in the United States, established in 1886. It was located on 9 acres in South Pasadena and could be reached by the Pacific Electric Railway’s South Pasadena car. Guests at the farm could ride on the back of an ostrich or take an ostrich drawn carriage ride. An ostrich could reach a speed of 35 miles per hour; they were ill-tempered creatures and their kicks were lethal. The farm’s gift shop offered hats, boas, capes, fans, and of course feathers. Crawston’s closed in 1935. At one time there were 10 ostrich farms in the Los Angeles area, the last closed in 1953.
