Child stuck on playground

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 21 through Feb. 27, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, February 21 At 12:49 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported natural gas leak in the 100 block of West Pamela Road.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a light odor of natural gas in the entry of the structure. Fire personnel utilized an atmospheric monitor to determine the cause and location of the possible leak. The atmospheric check of the structure and neighboring structures for natural gas leaks was negative. Further investigation determined the probable cause of the odor was due to a deceased rodent or animal beneath the house. The residents were advised to contact an exterminator to abate the problem.

Monday, February 22 At 12:24 p.m., Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with one Pasadena Fire Department unit, responded to a reported child stuck inside playground equipment near the intersection of East Colorado Boulevard and North Second Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three-year-old male with his right leg stuck between two steel bars. Fire personnel used a petroleum jelly lubricant to safely remove the child’s leg from between the bars. The child was otherwise uninjured and released to his parents.

Tuesday, February 23 At 5:10 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and units from the Pasadena and the Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported electrical fire in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a refrigerator with an odor of burning electrical inside of the building.  Electrical power was shut off to the appliance, and it was removed to the exterior of the building.

Wednesday, February 24 * At 5:50 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and units from the Monrovia Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 100 block of West Naomi. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a small fire in a bathroom wall heater that was out upon fire department arrival. Fire personnel checked for fire extension in the nearby walls with a thermal imaging camera to determine that the fire had not spread inside the walls prior to leaving the scene.

* At 3:02 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 700 block of East Norman Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male lying supine on the bathroom floor with right side weakness, slurred speech, and right side facial droop. Fire personnel conducted a complete assessment of the patient and found no other complaints or injuries. Fire Paramedics provided advanced life support treatment and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, February 25 At 11:43 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical emergency in the 900 block of Hugo Reid. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a patient who had been experiencing chest discomfort for the past several hours. Fire personnel provided advanced life support treatment and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, February 26 At 11:01 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107 Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a report of smoke in a structure in the 1100 block of Volante Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a Los Angeles County Engine investigating smoke from an attic, which was caused by the resident using smoke for bee removal. Fire personnel conducted additional investigations. No fire was located at the structure.

Saturday, February 27 At 4:12 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a report of minor flooding in the 200 block of Campus Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found water leaking into the structure as a result of a recent rain storm. Fire personnel assisted the occupants by repositioning previously deployed sand bags in front of the structure to prevent water from entering the building.

Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review. Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
