“Lucky” Baldwin treated his prize Thoroughbred horses more tenderly than some people treat their children. His Coach Barn, built in 1879-80 included immaculate stalls, novel hay shoots, sliding doors and ornate wrought iron fretwork, as well as paneling throughout of alternating redwood and white pine. Groomers slept in the hay loft, which was less luxurious than the horse stalls. To top off the grandeur, Baldwin had a Tally Ho Carriage, which was used to meet guests and transport them on country outings. It included an ice compartment for Champagne, a wicker food container, as well as a rack for ladies’ parasols, among other amenities.
