Santa Anita Avenue was named by E. J. Baldwin, and was first noted in 1883 on maps of the Santa Anita Tracts that advertised the sale of land owned by Baldwin. The double boulevard was Arcadia’s “Main Street.” At one time, Baldwin planned to erect a huge 500 -room hotel at the northern terminus of the double drive, in the foothills overlooking the entire valley. The hotel was to be named, “Hotel Santa Anita.” Baldwin’s “weakened” financial position made the project impossible to pursue.
