EATON FIRE CLEAN-UP RAISES CONCERNS

This week, there has been a lot of discussion regionally regarding the use of a site in Irwindale to temporarily store household hazardous waste from the Eaton Fire zone. Several cities issued a letter opposing the site, Mayor Cao issued a similar letter raising questions about a lack of notice or clear planning provided, and two public meetings were held that

were highly emotional and low on concrete details. While plans were originally to haul the materials “using back roads” and avoiding the freeways – which would have taken trucks directly through Arcadia’s streets – a revised plan has been developed that would utilize the freeway. This is a big win for us. We do have residual concerns about the site itself

because it sits right on top of our water table. So, we will ensure that the EPA is taking necessary measures to protect the materials in transit as well as on the placement site. You’d like to think that the federal agency charged with avoiding environmental disasters would be good at this stuff, but the lack of details provided thus far is concerning.
