Charles Eaton and his wife opened Eaton’s Santa Anita Restaurant in December 1939 at the southeast corner of Colorado Blvd. and Michillinda on historic Route 66. It featured chicken and steak on its menu, and at great prices: a prime-rib dinner cost under a dollar. In 1941, Eaton built a “hotel complex” for $100,000 that consisted of 60 bungalows, and featured a badminton court and swimming pool on beautifully landscaped grounds. In 1969, Eaton lost his eight and one half acre facility due to failure to pay taxes.
