East Meets West Parent Education Club (EMWPEC) in collaboration with the South Pasadena / San Mario YMCA hosted its end of the year parenting conference and annual student leadership award ceremony at the YMCA this Sunday afternoon, on November 12.
The four outstanding students receiving leadership awards were Aronne Chan (Arcadia High School), Melissa Brassard (Westridge School), Stanley Kwong and Melvin Adams (both San Marino High School)

A panel of three career schoolteachers and educators spoke on the topic of “Effective Parenting from Educators Point of View.” EMWPEC’s club advisor, Ivy Sun, who was named 2017 Congressional Woman of the Year in San Marino, addressed three important principals on how to prepare a child to be an outstanding leader. Ron Gunnoe, an award-winning schoolteacher with 25 years in the classroom, talked about “Growth vs. Fixed Mindset”. He reminded parents that intelligence can be improved by training and growing the mindset. Grace Jeong, executive director of Gradomain LLC providing college planning consulting services, emphasized ten steps to help parents “Let Go” as their children make the transition to college.

Following the presentations, a holiday celebration meal was served at the YMCA. This provided an opportunity for family social connection. Parents interacted with speakers for further advice.

Later in November, EMWPEC will have a donation drive for the homeless people in downtown Los Angeles. In December, the club will sponsor a Young Musicians Holiday Celebration Concert at the Kensington retirement facility in the city of Sierra Madre. The final event of the year will be Homeless Meal Preparation at Union Station, Pasadena, on December 10th.
