Fire report: Pinky crushed

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of November 29, 2009 through December 5, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 29 At 12:03 p.m., Engine 105 responded to an electrical wire down in the 1200 block of Louise Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a downed service line in the rear yard.  Fire personnel secured the area and called for a representative from Southern California Edison to arrive to abate the hazard.

Tuesday, December 1 At 3:07 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision involving a bicyclist in the intersection of Fano Street and South Santa Anita Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a middle-aged male in the street with multiple abrasions and musculoskeletal injuries. Fire personnel assessed, bandaged, and splinted the patient’s injuries and transported him to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, December 2 At 12:31 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1900 block of South Sixth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath.  Advanced life support measures were provided on scene including a 12-lead Electrocardiogram. The patient was taken to Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, December 3 * At 4:22 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the vicinity of East Newman Avenue and North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient experiencing leg pain with multiple abrasions to her body after an apparent jump from a moving vehicle. Advanced life support measures were provided on scene. The patient was taken into custody by Arcadia Police and transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

* At 5:33 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 100 block of North First Avenue to a reported traumatic injury. Upon arrival, fire personnel found gym employees assisting a 24 year old male who had lost control of a 350 lb weight bar.  The weight bar landed on his right hand causing a crushing injury to his nearly severed pinky and ring fingers. Fire Paramedics treated and transported the patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, December 4 At 1:55 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a hazardous condition in the 1100 block of Arcadia Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a vehicle leaking fuel from the fuel tank.  Fire personnel unsuccessfully attempted to patch the leak.  A tow truck was called to the scene and the vehicle was taken to an auto repair facility for repairs.

Saturday, December 5 * At 1:58 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 200 block of Colorado Place. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered a combative elderly male lying on the sidewalk. After further investigation, fire personnel found the patient had sustained head trauma from an unknown source. Fire Paramedics evaluated, treated and transported this patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

The Fire Prevention Bureau’s Administrative Intern position, held by Lili Huang, was reclassified to Fire Prevention Aide. The position responsibilities include: performing annual inspections, complaint investigations, and language translation. Ms. Huang has been with the City for 5 years and speaks fluent Chinese.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 369 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2.5 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
