The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of December 20, 2009 through December 26, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 20 At 1:16 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Pasadena Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a smell of smoke within the structure. Positive pressure ventilation was provided to clear the structure of smoke and the cause of the smoke was determined to be electrical in nature.

Monday, December 21 At 7:18 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 encountered a middle-aged male displaying a behavioral problem in the area of Colorado Boulevard and North Santa Anita Avenue. The individual, for no apparent reason, began hitting the fire engine with his hands. Fire personnel requested Arcadia Police and began to talk to the individual in an attempt to calm him down. Upon police arrival, the individual’s behavior escalated to the point of tazing the subject as the only means to subdue him. After the patient was tazed, fire crews treated and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

At 11:15 a.m., Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision with a person trapped in an overturned vehicle at the intersection of Woodruff and South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered that the occupants were out of the vehicle. Additional resources where dispatched to the scene due to multiple patients, all of which were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.



At 2:55 p.m., US&R 106 was requested by Monrovia Fire Department to shore a building near the intersection of Highway Esplanade and West Huntington Drive in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted the Monrovia Fire Department shore a building in which a vehicle had driven into a structure.

Wednesday, December 23 * At 10:06 a.m., Truck 105, Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Fire Marshal 105 responded to a major flooding in the 1200 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large commercial business with a broken fire sprinkler and water coming out of the front door. Fire personnel shut down the fire sprinkler system, with the help of the City Water Division, and used a variety of water removal techniques and tools to remove the water. * At 7:40 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with the Los Angeles County and Pasadena Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews found the fire alarm ringing and light smoke coming from a convalescent hospital. Fire personnel investigated and found the smoke coming from a defective heater on the roof. Fire personnel shut down the power to the heater and removed the smoke from the structure prior to releasing the structure to the facility manager.

Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) * At 5:26 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded to a natural gas leak inside of a structure in the 1100 block of Okoboji. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a stove leaking natural gas. Fire personnel shut off gas to the appliance and advised the resident to contact a licensed plumber for the proper repair.

* At 4:13 p.m., Engine 107 was requested by Sierra Madre Fire to assist on a vehicle fire on Santa Anita Canyon Road. Fire personnel assisted the Sierra Madre Fire Department with the extinguishment and overhaul of a fully involved vehicle fire that spread into nearby brush. Crews from the United States Forest Service and Monrovia Fire Department provided additional water, assisted in extinguishment and overhaul on the vehicle and surrounding brush.

Friday, December 25 (Christmas Day)* At 5:08 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision in the 1100 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered the driver of a minivan trapped in the vehicle after striking a parked car. Additional resources were called to the incident to assist with extricating the patient with the “Jaws of Life” by removing the driver’s side door. The patient was treated at the scene with advanced life support and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. * At 12:31 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported natural gas explosion in the 400 block of Cambridge Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found damage to the exterior and portions of the interior from the explosion and residual odor of natural gas within the structure. Fire personnel shut down utilities to the structure and utilized positive pressure ventilation to remove any remaining gas from the structure. The Southern California Gas Company was called to the location for further investigation.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 227 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 2 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
