Map of Racetrack 1940

This map of 1940 caught our attention, and gives us a good idea of what the center of Arcadia looked like about seventy years ago.

1-Reservoir (capacity 5,000,000 gallons).  2-Maltese Cross, under which are buried “Lucky” Baldwin’s 4 American Derby winners. 3-Stud Barns, where the famous racers were born and bred. 4-Baldwin’s One-Mile Training Track, built in 1876. 5-Pump House. 6-Racing Stables, for racers in training and early meets (removed). 7-Reservoir (capacity 250,000 gallons) (removed). 8-Hay Barn (removed). 9-Wagon Shed (removed). 10-Santa Fe Depot, built in 1887.  11-Blacksmith Shop (removed). 12-Bunk House (removed). 13-Corn Crib (removed). 14-Boarding House for Rancho employees (removed). 15-Stables (removed). 16-Administration Building for Rancho Santa Anita. 17-Piggery (removed). 18-One-Mile Race Track of Mrs. Anita M. Baldwin construction begun 1932 but abandoned before completion. 19-Ornate Coach Barn where Baldwin kept his tallyho and fancy steppers. 20-Granery (removed). 21-General Store for Rancho employees (removed). 22-Queen Anne Cottage, the house of romance. 23-Baldwin Lake in a magnificent park. 24-Hugo Reid Adobe, built in 1839, wing added in 1876 by “Lucky” Baldwin. 25-Hay Barn (removed). 26-Anita Chiquita Five-Eights-Mile Training Track, built in 1936. 27-Packing House (removed). 28-“Anoakia”- Residence of Mrs. Anita M. Baldwin. 29-Dwellings for Rancho employees and their families (removed).  30-Dairy (removed). 31-Slaughter House (removed). 32-Los Angeles Turf Club’s One-Mile Santa Anita Race Track, built in 1934. 33-Old Winery Buildings. 34-Parker Lyon’s famous Pony Express Museum. 35-Los Angeles County Santa Anita Recreational Park and Golf Course. 36-E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin’s Santa Anita Park and Race Track where celebrated racing meets were held from 1907 to 1909. 37-Oakwood Hotel, in Arcadia, built by Baldwin in 1887, a rendezvous for the elite, burned in 1911. 38-Arcadia Civic Center.
