New Year’s Day med assists

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of December 27, 2009 through January 2, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 27 At 6:07 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 105 responded with units from the Monrovia Fire Department to a medical assist in the 12000 block of Lower Azusa Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient complaining of severe leg cramps following five hours of physical exertion playing badminton. Basic life support measures were provided on scene and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, December 28 At 9:57 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient with and symptoms of an altered level of consciousness and vomiting.  Advanced life support measures were provided on scene, including a 12-lead Electrocardiogram and glucose reading. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, December 29 At 5:48 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 00 block of East Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a non-breathing and pulseless elderly male at a health club. Fire personnel performed CPR, administered life saving medications, and utilized an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to deliver electric shocks to the patient’s heart. Upon arrival at a local emergency room, this patient was breathing on his own, moving all four extremities, and had a strong and regular heartbeat.

Wednesday, December 30 At 12:03 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, and the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported vehicle into a structure in the 800 block of West Naomi. Upon arrival, Fire personnel found a mid-size vehicle that had been driven inside a two-story condominium. Upon further investigation, fire personnel found the driver to be non-injured and the structure to have sustained moderate structural damage. The Arcadia Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue vehicle was called to the scene and the unstable structure was reinforced per Arcadia Building Inspector requirements. All occupants were allowed to re-enter the structure and the scene was released to the occupants.

Thursday, December 31 At 2:59 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported person down in the 400 block of South Santa Anita Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel identified the patient, who was suffering from an altered level of consciousness.  The patient was treated with advanced life support measures and transported to a local hospital. During the incident, fire personnel were advised by the Arcadia Police Department of another person down in the park. Due to the distance between the two patients, Truck 105 and Monrovia Paramedic Engine 102 were dispatched to handle the additional call for medical assistance.

Friday, January 1 From 9:00 a.m., to 8:00 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 706 assisted the Pasadena Fire Department with Paramedic services at the 2010 Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena. Rescue Ambulance 706 paramedics provided advanced life support to a number of patients with medical complaints ranging from alcohol and drug problems to an elderly male with a malfunctioning internal deliberator. In all, five patients were transported to area emergency rooms for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 211 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 7 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
