In only one month the Arcadia Rotary Club’s will unveil the first Arcadia Field of Honor featuring 1,000 American flags displayed at L.A. County’s Arcadia Park at an opening ceremony on May 21. Each flag donated by local resident in memory of someone special or an individual who served the United States with distinction will fly on an eight-foot staff from May 21-May 29 at the corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue.
The end of the display period will coincide with L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich’s annual Salute to Veterans and their Families event at the park on May 28, when a separate dedication of a memorial will also take place near the same location in the park along Huntington Drive across from the Elks Lodge — Gene Glasco’s Arcadia Vietnam War Monument.
The Field of Honor flags will each feature a laminated tag with a personal message of up to 25 words about the honoree or an optional photo. Proceeds from the tax-deductible $50 cost of each flag will be used to support the creation of a separate veterans memorial in Arcadia in about three years (one-third of proceeds) and Arcadia Rotary-supported charities such as teacher mini-grants, Boy Scouts, polio eradication, clean water projects around the world, etc. (two-thirds of proceeds).
Those who paid for flags may claim them after the event of leave them to be stored and used in future years.
Former Mayor and Arcadia Rotarian Bob Harbicht is overseeing this project — to order a flag or for more information, e-mail him at pbharbicht@gmail.com.
