Par 3 Grand Re-Opening

Golfers and non-golfers alike turned out for the grand re-opening of the Par 3 Arcadia Golf Course at 620 E. Live Oak Ave. Councilman Roger Chandler, who some say can be seen as often at Par 3 as anywhere else in town, was clearly proud to emcee the event. He showed his skills immediately after the ceremony in casual putting and driving contests among many City staff and commissioners as seen the video below.

Pointing to the pretty green natural grass on the driving range that has replaced the faded artificial turf, Roger noted that the area was originally a dump site and that the 1,947-yard course itself, which first opened in 1962, was formerly an orange grove.

After two 10-year contracts with American Golf Corp.  in 1988 and 1998 under Roger and fellow Councilman Bob Harbicht, the contract with American Golf was renewed again recently. Bob called it a win-win situation, significantly increasing the money generated for the City since American took over 20 years ago, and providing a recreational facility for residents.

This time various City departments will be more involved with course operations and Arcadia Recreation and Community Services has already begun scheduling many programs there under director Sara Somogy (pictured at left, top row, second from left), including last Saturday’s family event with putting and nine-hole contests, a demo, barbeque, and craft area. Golf lessons for beginners and intermediates are scheduled throughout August. Sara also put together the lively and lovely Grand Re-Opening reception the previous night.

Roger said a new training facility will open soon featuring sand traps and a green that is up to PGA standards.

Bob presented a certificate of appreciation to American Golf’s Joe Adamo, who is the general manager of the course.
