Ultimately, the Army no longer needed Ross Field and only a skeleton crew remained. The land was ideal for use as an airport, and in the 1920s private pilots used the field as such. Hundreds learned to fly here, including the famous Poncho Barnes. Reports of light plane landings and take offs on local streets were disturbing to Arcadia’s residents, as well as its police force.
