Sweeper engulfed in flames

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of May 23-29, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, May 23 At 8:05 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported public assist in the 2300 block of South Sixth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly female on the floor and unable to get up. Firefighters evaluated the patient for injuries and, finding none, assisted her up from the floor and back into her chair.

Monday, May 24 At 8:40 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a fire alarm activation in the 300 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel determined the alarm was caused by food burning in the oven. Fire personnel utilized positive pressure ventilation to remove the smoke from the structure and reset the fire alarm.

Tuesday, May 25 At 12:21 p.m., Engine 106 and Truck 105 responded to a reported elevator rescue in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three-story retail store with one victim trapped inside an elevator car, which was stuck between floors two and three. Fire personnel opened the doors of the elevator with the use of specialized elevator tools and helped the victim out of the elevator. Power to the elevator was disconnected and a repair person was notified.

Wednesday, May 26 At 12:15 p.m., Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105 and Monrovia Engine 102 responded to a reported vehicle into a structure in the 2000 block of Holly Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle in the front yard of the residence resting against the building, causing damage to a small section of the exterior wall of the residence.  The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and refused medical treatment.  A City building official was requested to the location to determine if the structure was safe to be occupied.


Thursday, May 27 At 7:05 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle fire in the area of South Baldwin Avenue and West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a parking lot sweeper engulfed in fire on the top level of a parking structure. Fire crews extinguished and overhauled the fire, utilizing compressed air foam.

Saturday, May 29 At 3:30 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a pediatric patient that sustained a major laceration to his left finger after it was caught in a wheel chair. The patient received basic life support measures on scene. The hand was dressed and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 450 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
