The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 21 through March 27, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, March 21 At 2:22 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported emergency medical assist in the 900 block of Fairview Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a middle-aged female lying on a bed with abdominal pain. After further evaluation, fire personnel determined she was five weeks pregnant and had suffered a possible miscarriage. Fire Paramedics treated and transported her to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, March 22 At 2:16 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an 80-year-old male having difficulty breathing.  ire personnel treated the patient with advanced life support measures and transported him to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, March 23 At 3:16 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 2000 block of South Eighth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath.  The patient received advanced life support measures, including a 12-lead Electrocardiogram.  The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, March 24 At 12:48 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Pasadena Truck 32, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to smoke coming from a residence with a fire alarm activation in the 1000 block of La Cadena. Upon arrival, fire personnel found that food had been left unattended on the stove and was burning. Fire personnel extinguished the small fire and utilized positive pressure ventilation to remove smoke from the building.

Thursday, March 25 At 4:29 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulances 105 responded to a vehicle accident in the intersection of South Baldwin Avenue and Arcadia Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle that had sheared a light standard. One patient was evaluated and found to be uninjured. The downed light standard caused energized power lines to fall to the street. Southern California Edison was notified to respond to the incident to abate the hazard. Fire crews cleared the scene after Edison deemed the power lines safe.

Friday, March 26 At 3:13 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a person with a head laceration in the 100 block of Campus Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 16-year -old male with a laceration to the back of his head. Fire personnel treated the patient on scene and transported him to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, March 27 At 8:40 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a vehicle fire in the 100 block of North First Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle fully engulfed in fire located on the top level of a parking structure. Fire personnel utilized ropes to raise hose lines to the upper level and extinguished the fire. An investigation was conducted and determined that a person living in a van had plugged a space heater into an outdoor outlet. The cord, being pinched in the vehicle door, shorted out igniting combustibles stored within the vehicle. The occupant of the vehicle sustained minor burns to one of his hands. The patient refused any medical treatment. The vehicle was overhauled and turned over to Arcadia Police.

Fire Inspector Jill Perumean attended the California Fire Prevention Institute’s annual workshop in Buellton, CA.  She was formally inducted as President of the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers at the awards banquet on March 18, 2010. As President, Jill will attend various events throughout the year, representing the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers. Additionally, she will chair monthly meetings that promote fire service training and education, as well as building and fire code development and revision.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 590 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, capturing incident photos and processing the photos for a house fire to which the Fire Department responded on January 16.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
