The Santa Anita Dairy

In her Anoakia Breeding Farm catalogue (1916), Anita gave an excellent review of the workings and output of her dairy. It produced the finest quality of milk, cream and butter, but the flavor, richness and butter fat qualities of the milk produced were incomparable. The barns and other buildings (creamery, test barn, milk barn) were all of concrete, the most durable and sanitary building materials obtainable. The milking and feeding stables were fitted with automatic flushing arrangements by which the manure and litter of the stables could be carried directly to the alfalfa fields, where it aided in fertilizing the soil. Every modern sanitary precaution needed for the production of absolutely pure milk was incorporated.
All the latest devices and machinery were utilized to make the dairy complete in every detail. It was a model and one of a kind. In a press release of June, 1916 it was noted that, “Perhaps the largest individual sale ever made by an individual breeder of Holstein cattle in America is the $43,000 worth of choice stock sold to Anita M. Baldwin of Santa Anita Rancho.”
The Supreme Dairy took over the Ranch dairy and operated it until 1937.
